Uzunca bir zamandır çiftleme şeklinde çalışıyorum:) Bulut bilişim ile ilgili çalışmalarım bir İngilizce bir de Türkçe:) 

Hazırladığım hiçbir sunum bir birinin aynı değil:) Anlattıklarım, örnekler birbirinin aynı değil.. Hem Türkçe, hem İngilizce.. Valla bu da beni iki misli yoruyor:))

Sevgili bilişimciler, bilişime gönül verenler İngilizce öğrense de ben de çiftlemeden kurtulsam:)) 

 

Şaka bir yana, bilişimcilerin, bilişime gönül verenlerin mutlaka ve mutlaka İngilizce okuduklarını anlamaları, İngilizce yazabilmeleri ve dertlerini konuşarak anlatabilmeleri gerekiyor. It has been long time that I've been working double:) My works about Cloud compıting are both in English and in Turkish :) 

The presentations I prepared are always dissimilar from eachother:)  My explonations, examples I give are never the same. . Both in Turkish and English.. Honestly, this makes me tried double:))

You have to understand what you read in English, you have to write and talk in English so the world would understand you and you would understand the world. Inorder to keep up with your profession and to apply the necessary technology at the correct time and place you have to learn English.. This way we all can reach success more easily.

Çeviri / Translation

Translation is a one hard job to do. I know it very well. Here is my story about it:)

 

I studied French in high school and graduated from University of Istanbul. Then began working for the biggest white good producer in my country as a programmer in the IT department. So my English were not so good.. I married and immigrated to US at 1983 after 2 years of work.  I was bored sitting at home and wanted to work. There were people from Turkish consulate in our building as our neighbors.. They told me that consulate was going to hire workers. So I applied for it. It was about 4-6 months that I was living in New York, so still with little English.

Anyway, after they had applications I had been told that there was going to be an exam. I took the exam.

hehe:)) they gave us an article from a newspaper and wanted from us to translate. I was frighten, because I knew so little English then.  But they put many dictionaries on the table, so I calmed down. I took one dictionary and the article and began translation. The article was about "Heart Attack" and at the headings  "Heart Attack" were writing..

I opened the dictionary looked for heart, and found Turkish translation as "merhametsiz" (merciless..) and looked for attacks and Turkish translation was " saldırı" (assault..) and translated the whole article as "merhametsiz saldırılar" (merciless assaults). hahaha..

After the exam, I learned the meaning of "heart attack" in Turkish;  "Kalp krizi" hahaha..

I always wonder the person who read this exam paper and laugh and laugh...

So translation is a really hard job to do..

Lisede Fransızca okudum ve İstanbul Üniversitesi’ nden mezun oldum. Sonra ülkemdeki en büyük beyaz eşya üreticinde programcı olarak çalışmaya başladım. Yani İngilizcem hiçte iyi değildi. İki sene çalıştıktan sonra 1983’ te evlendim ve US’e göç ettim. 

Evde oturmaktan sıkıldım ve çalışmak istedim. Türk konsolosluğunda çalışan komşularım vardı. Bana konsolosluğun sınavla çalışan alacağını söylediler. Ben de başvurdum. New York'ta oturalı henüz 4-6 ay olmuştu, yani halen çok az İngilizce'm vardı.

Herneyse, başvuruları aldıktan sonra bir sınav olacağını söylediler. Ben de sınava girdim.

hehe:)) Bize gazeten bir makale verdiler ve tercüme etmemizi istediler. Ben korkmuştum, çünkü halen İngilizcem çok azdı. Ama masanın üzerine bir sürü lugat koydular, ve ben sakinleştim. Lugatlardan birini ve makaleyi aldım çeviriye başladım.

Makale "Heart attacks"  ile ilgiliydi ve başlığında da "Heart attacks" yazıyordu. Lugatı açtım "Heart" buldum; "merhametsiz", sonra "attack" aradım buldum; "saldırı". Ve bütün makaleyi "Merhametsiz saldırılar" olarak tercüme ettim. hahahaha..

Sınav sonrasında "Heart attacks"' Turkçe karşılığının kalp krizi olduğunu öğrendim.. hahahaha.. Halen sınav kağıdımı kimin okuduğunu merak ederim ve hatırladıkça gülerim.

Evet, çeviri zor bir iştir..

Üzgün bir gün../ A sad day..

Bazen Allahaısmarladık demek ne kadar zor oluyor.. Bugün Sedat hocamı (Sn.Dr.Sedat Özkol) uğurladık. Kendisiyle yaklaşık iki sene önce tanıştım. Bir gün aradı beni, “Bulut Bilişim konusunda Google’da arama yaptım her yaptığım aramada siz karşıma çıktınız, gelin konuşalım” diye çağırdı beni. Ofisine gittim ve tanıştım kendileriyle, sonrasında İTÜ’de düzenlediği birçok seminerde bulut bilişim ile konuşma yaptım.  

Google’a “anamız” diye hitap ettiğini ilk seminerinde duyduğumda çok gülmüştüm.  Bugün ülkemizde 45 milyon kişi internet kullanıcısı, yani yaklaşık nüfusun yarısı kullanıyor interneti (2009 nüfus sayımı; 71,517,100). Yani halen kullanmayanlar mevcut.

Hocam bir gün televizyonda devlet erkanından bir kişinin kendisiyle konuşan gazetecinin Google’dan bahsetmesi üzerine “Google’da kim oluyor” cevabına kızıyor, bunun üzerine her yerde başından geçen şu olayı anlatıyor; eşi bir gün Selanik örgü kazak örmek istiyor ama nasıl öreceğini unutmuş, hocama “annem hayatta olsaydı şimdi sorardım ona” diyor. Sonra birlikte Google’da aramaya karar veriyorlar ve arama neticesinde adım adım örgü yöntemini buluyorlar ve eşi kazağı bir güzel örüyor.. Bundan sonra Google’a “annemiz” diyorlar..

Bir gün konuşuyoruz yine “hocam benim şirketim tek kişilik, bir tek ben varım” dedim üzülerek bir sorusuna karşılık, “senin şirkete filan ihtiyacım yok, sen kendin şirketsin, yoluna devam et”  diye beni cesaretlendirdi. 

Evet hoca yine sordu “nasıl tanırsınız?” insanlara, bilgiye hürmetli ve işine sadık çok iyi bir insan olarak tanıdım kendisini.  Üzülerek de uğurladım.. uğurladım mı? Sanmıyorum.  Umuyorum ben de onun gibi son günüme kadar çalışmalarıma devam edebilirim.

Sometimes it is so hard to say good bye.. Today we said good bye to dear Dr.Sedat Özkol who was teaching at Istanbul Technical University. One day he called and said he was searching about “bulut bilişim” (cloud computing) at Google and every time in search results he was seeing my name, so he wanted to meet. He gave me his office address and I went to meet him. Then I talked many of his conferences or meetings I talked about cloud computing.

When I first time heard him saying “Google is our mother”   at the first conference I attended laughed a lot. Today we have 45 million people in my country are using internet, so almost half of the population( according to 2009 counting results we have 71,517,100 population number). And there are still people who are not using it.

One day at news on tv Mr.Özkol had heard that some of the government people saying “what the hack is Google” while was replying a news man’s questions.  Hearing that Mr. Özkol was becoming angry and telling this story everywhere combining with his own;

One day his wife want to knit some pattern, but she said that she forgot how to and if her mother would be alive then would be learning again from her.. and both were deciding to search at Google and at the result found step by step application of the pattern..

After these two story, he was calling Google as our mother.

Another day while we were talking again, I answered his question sadly saying “ well I have only me in my company at the moment” . With encouraging me he said “you do not need any company, you are a company, keep going”.

Yes, we had been asked again “how do you know him?” Here is how I know him; he was very good man and so respectful to human beings, knowledge and his work. . and I sadly said good bye.. did I? I don’t think so, I always will remember him.

 

 

Today & tomorrow of the Innovation Conference

Today I attended the conference at  İstanbul Chamber of Commerce which I'm one of its member. For me it was very informative, learned about Innovation and how it is supported by government with Teknoparks, Teknokents and other organizations. There were very nice examples presented too.

We had lunch at the roof and roof has a terrace. Since it was a beatiful day, I took some pictures too.

 Here were presenters with their memorable words:

"Automation is important for efficeincy and productivity. Our scales must compete with world ones" Hasan Büyükdere ( Teknopark İstanbul board member ) 

Nazire Peker ( İstanbul Technical University's ARI Teknokent General Manager) gave many numbers about the Teknokent, all are promissing. 

Hande Akçe ( TUBITAK - The Scientific and Technological Research Counsil of Turkey - Expert) gave some information about their donations and TUBITAK's support to firms for innovation, all are promissing. (http://www.tubitak.gov.tr/en/ot/10/;jsessionid=6EA38140B8700F03791F4E261E686F28)

Prof.Dr. Nader Nada ( Fatih University - http://fatih.edu.tr/?&language=EN) talked about their new department about Innovation at their University. He also mentioned about Innovations Centers which he wants to build in Turkey. He said strategy is important in innovation but overlaping the strategy onto organization is much more important than that. 

Prof.Dr. Nader Nada also said there should be innovation in education in Turkey. And I agree with him. Innovation in education will trigger other innovations in the country.

Well as you may guess in the morning they analyzed the present state of the Innovation in our country. In the afternoon Innovation examples from the world and from the Turkey were presented.

After seeing the examples we continued with Innovation policies in Turkey.

"Innovation must be our life style." Mehmet Akif Özyurt (İstanbul Chamber's parliamentarian) 

Mr. Özyurt also mentioned the importance of education and he said the education system must also be support innovation. He also brought lacking processes into agenda. 

Doc.Dr. Aykut Arıkan (Yeditepe University - http://yeditepe.edu.tr/?&language_id=2) began with what is not innovation. 

"Problem > idea >ar-ge > solution > added value is the definitio of innovation" said Mr. Arıkan.  He also mentioned about a center to strike ideas, a future museum and a center about  learning on demand. 

Recep Uzungil ( Expert at Minister of Science, Industry and Technology - http://www.sanayi.gov.tr/Default.aspx?lng=en) he talked about the support procedures and mentioned many types of support from government via some laws.

 

I found that conference very promissing about innovation. However there were some lacks almost in every kind of support coming from the organizations. As far as see there is no measuring and controlling. Without measuring the results how can we talk about innovation? At least added value should be measured, as far as I see there has been no measuring going on. What is the goal? support every innovative project? How can we manage that, we are not that much rich country.. Sectors must be analyzed and  innovative ones must be determined. According to TUBITAK IT is highly supported so Energy, Water and Food sector must take place.. I'm not sure that IT is highly supported, because I'm not seen many innovations in IT in my country. There were some good questions asked too.. one was " is there any Turkish brand in IT at world scale that we do not avare of?" Asking the same question to all of you, please name it..

As all conference long said universities should collaborate with industry and industry should collaborate with universities.. I'm agree with Prof. Nada we definetly need innovation in education, I'm also agree with Dr. Arıkan we need places to stike ideas to eachother and I'm agree with Mr. Özyurt we need some controlling and measuring mechanizm not only for innovation support, in every area we needed.. 

I would like to thank İstanbul Chamber of Commerce inviting me such informative conference about innovation.
